The H. R. Haldeman Diaries consists of seven handwritten diaries, 36 dictated diaries recorded as sound recordings, and two handwritten audio cassette tape subject logs. The diaries and logs reflect H. R. Haldeman’s candid personal record and reflections on events, issues, and people encountered during his service in the Nixon White House. As administrative assistant to the President and Chief of Staff, Haldeman attended and participated in public events and private meetings covering the entire scope of issues in which the Nixon White House engaged in during the years 1969-1973. We've been in California. I've been over in Palm Springs for the entire weekend and have had no contact at all with the President. Ehrlichman did call Saturday, and we got some memos in on the question of the President taking some action with the House conferees regarding the pay raise question, no not on the pay raise, on the tax check-off question. And as a result of that, I sent in some recommendation memos on Saturday, which resulted in the President deciding Saturday night—after he got back from the Hope Hospital dedication and an afternoon of golf in Palm Springs—to return to Washington on Sunday, because he had to have a meeting Monday morning with the House and Senate people. So we readjusted the schedule and will depart here Sunday afternoon.
On Friday night I was called at 11:00 by the Vice President, who said they had a problem on the golf game tomorrow, because there was something going between Hope and Sinatra. Paul Keyes had gotten into the problem of who rides in the cart with the President. Keyes had told Hope, via Pete Malatesta, that the President wanted Sinatra to ride with him, and that this apparently had Hope's nose out of joint. In any event, I told the Vice President that I had had nothing to do with setting it up. Rose Woods had handled it all for the President and that he should call Rose, which he agreed he would do in the middle of the night.

557. Memorandum From Arnold Nachmanoff of the National Security Council Staff, to the President’s Assistant for National Security Affairs (Kissinger), Washington, November 26, 1971., Washington, November 26, 1971
National Security Council staff member Nachmanoff summarized a recent memorandum from Executive Secretary Eliot regarding potential problems that might result from a recent narcotics seizure and informed President’s Assistant for National Security Affairs Kissinger that Panama had become a major conduit for heroin and cocaine traffic to the United States. Nachmanoff’s main concern was the possible effect that public and Congressional attention on the narcotics problem might have on the Canal negotiations.
