The H. R. Haldeman Diaries consists of seven handwritten diaries, 36 dictated diaries recorded as sound recordings, and two handwritten audio cassette tape subject logs. The diaries and logs reflect H. R. Haldeman’s candid personal record and reflections on events, issues, and people encountered during his service in the Nixon White House. As administrative assistant to the President and Chief of Staff, Haldeman attended and participated in public events and private meetings covering the entire scope of issues in which the Nixon White House engaged in during the years 1969-1973. Kissinger stated that agreement had been reached with the Chinese on “our general game plan” and it was essential to do nothing concerning recognition of Bangladesh until the Indian troops were withdrawn from Bangladesh.

President’s Assistant for National Security Affairs Kissinger and Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Ch’iao Kuan-hua continued to discuss the communiqué. Kissinger informed Ch’iao that the U.S. Ambassador to France, a close friend of President Nixon’s, would replace Walters and maintain the secret Paris channel.

During the third counterpart meeting between Secretary of State Rogers and Chinese Foreign Minister Chi P’eng-fei, Chi attributed the “lack of tranquility” in the world to U.S. post-World War II policies and Soviet intervention. He stressed that easing international tensions required respect for the five principles of peaceful co-existence. Rogers, in turn, provided a different version of the world situation. The two officials also discussed Vietnam and Cambodia.
