Among Pat Buchanan’s duties was the compilation and coordination of background briefing materials for Presidential and a few Vice Presidential press conferences. The briefings—for both the larger, announced press conferences and the smaller, informal ones held in the Oval Office—related to a widespread number of topics and were in the form of probable questions which the White House staff members anticipated news reporters would address to the President. Along with the questions, were answers recommended by Buchanan, other members of the White House staff, and the heads of major departments of the government.
The briefing books are primarily in the form of potential questions and suggested answers (often with heavy annotation by President Nixon), along with associated memos. A listing of briefing books is below, with indication of whether President Nixon annotated the book or not. Each book has an index to the potential questions with direct links to the National Archives Catalog. You should consult the full digital folder for suggested responses, President Nixon's annotations, and other documents and topics not covered by the index.POLITICAL & FOREIGN BRIEFING BOOK August 27, 1972 (Annotated)

- Do you think the Watergate break-in will be a campaign issue, damaging to your re-election chances?
- Would you like to see a speed-up so that the Watergate trials can be held before the election?

- $10 MILLION FUND
- Senator McGovern seems to be making an issue out of the $10 million your campaign collected, the source of which Mr. Stans refused to report. Do you think this will be damaging -- your campaign's continued refusal to name the individuals who contributed the money?
- Mr. Ziegler has denied any connection between the increase in milk price support, and the milk producers political contribution. But do you believe that this charge, together with refusal to acknowledge the source of the $10 million, the Watergate episode and the ITT matter, can you create a climate of suspicion that will hurt your candidacy?
- Are you concerned about your Administration's reputed coziness with Big Business?

- FOREIGN POLICY -- VIETNAM
- Secretary Rogers has indicated we may well see the end of the Vietnam War before the elections, or shortly thereafter. Can you comment on that? When do you think the war will be over for the United States?
- There are still foreign claims that the United States is bombing dikes; and doing extensive civilian damage. Can you comment on this?
- How is the enemy offensive going; and what is your assessment of the military situation?
- With today's announcement, are we not reaching the point where all that remains is a residual force. How large will that force be?
- Some Air Force officers recently had a backgrounder asserting we could be bombing North Vietnam, as we are today, two and three years from now. Is that a realistic possibility in your view?
- Some officers contend that despite the bombing and mining North Vietnam is getting in sufficient supplies to maintain its offensive at present levels indefinitely. Is that correct, and is the mining and bombing proving less effective than you had hoped?

- ADDENDUM TO FOREIGN POLICY Q & A
- Yesterday, there were reports that a small Chinese minesweeper has appeared in Haiphong Harbor; can you verify this; and what would the United States do in the event that this Chinese vessel began sweeping the harbor?
- Yesterday Mr. Laird seemed to leave the impression that if the North Vietnamese pulled back across the DMZ, and ceased using that zone for re-supply and basing -- that the bombing of North Vietnam might stop. Would that be sufficient to produce a halt; or must all of the May 8 conditions be fulfilled?
