    Following is a listing of items of general interest which were announced in the press but not made public as formal White House press releases during the period covered by this issue.     • The President met with Mayors Joseph L. Alioto of San Francisco, Ivan Allen, Jr., of Atlanta, Richard Daley of Chicago, Milton Graham of Phoenix, John Lindsay of New York, Richard Lugar of Indianapolis, A. V. Sorenson of Omaha, Carl Stokes of Cleveland, Kevin White of Boston, and William Walsh of Syracuse for a discussion of the problems of the cities.
    • Miss Cathy Muirhead of Denton, Texas, the 1969 Maid of Cotton, was greeted by the President at the White House. Senator John G. Tower of Texas accompanied Miss Muirhead.
    • The 1969 Poster Child of the National Association of Hearing and Speech Agencies, 2-1/2-year-old David Lupi, visited the President at the White House.
    • The President met with a group of university professors to discuss matters pertaining to Asia. The group included Doak Barnett of Columbia, Lucien Pye of MIT, Edwin Reischauer of Harvard, Henry Rosovsky of Harvard, and George Taylor of the University of Washington.
    • The President greeted graduates of the Federal Executive Institute, an advanced study center for higher level Federal executives.
    • At the request of the President, Secretary of the Interior Walter J. Hickel will undertake a fact-finding mission to the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, beginning on May 1.
    • The President attended the White House News Photographers dinner.

    • GUILFORD DUDLEY, JR., of Tennessee, to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Denmark.
    • GEORGE MEANY, of Maryland, to be a member of the Board of Directors of the Communications Satellite Corporation until the date of the annual meeting of the Corporation in 1972 (reappointment).
    • EDWARD E. JOHNSTON, of Hawaii, to be High Commissioner of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands.
  • Each Public Papers of the Presidents volume contains the papers and speeches of the President of the United States that were issued by the White House Office of the Press Secretary during the time period specified by the volume. The material is presented in chronological order, and the dates shown in the headings are the dates of the documents or events. In instances when the release date differs from the date of the document itself, that fact is shown in the text note.

    To ensure accuracy, remarks have been checked against audio recordings (when available) and signed documents have been checked against the original, unless otherwise noted. Editors have provided text notes and cross references for purposes of identification or clarity.

  • The Federal Register is the official daily publication for rules, proposed rules, and notices of federal agencies and organizations, as well as executive orders and other Presidential documents.

  • The Congressional Record is the official daily record of the debates and proceedings of the U.S. Congress.

Archival Holdings

  • The H. R. Haldeman Diaries consists of seven handwritten diaries, 36 dictated diaries recorded as sound recordings, and two handwritten audio cassette tape subject logs. The diaries and logs reflect H. R. Haldeman’s candid personal record and reflections on events, issues, and people encountered during his service in the Nixon White House. As administrative assistant to the President and Chief of Staff, Haldeman attended and participated in public events and private meetings covering the entire scope of issues in which the Nixon White House engaged in during the years 1969-1973.   • The National Archives Catalog is the online portal to the records held at the National Archives, and information about those records. It is the main way of describing our holdings and also provides access to electronic records and digitized versions of our holdings.

    • 60. Memorandum From the Presidentʼs Assistant for National Security Affairs (Kissinger) to President Nixon, Washington, April 24, 1969

      Kissinger warned the President that the Congressional chorus on Nigeria might be rising again, in particular due to a new organization, “Americans for Biafran Relief,” with Senator Kennedy taking the lead. Tabs to attachment are included with Kissingerʼs January 28 memorandum, Document 25.

  • The Kissinger telephone conversation transcripts consist of approximately 20,000 pages of transcripts of Kissinger’s telephone conversations during his tenure as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (1969-1974) and Secretary of State (1973-1974) during the administration of President Richard Nixon. Visit the finding aid for more information.
