    Following is a listing of items of general interest which were announced in the press but not made public as formal White House press releases during the period covered by this issue. Appointments requiring Senate approval are not included since they appear in the list of nominations submitted to the Senate, below.

    • Helen Cotton of Grandby, Conn., a palsy victim who campaigned for the President, called on the President at the White House.
    • Thomas M. Goodfellow, Chairman of the Golden Spike Centennial Celebration Commission, presented the President with a medallion commemorating the 100th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad and a copy of an 1868 poster.
    • The President designated Postmaster General Winton M. Blount to represent him in Bolivia at the funeral of President Barrientos. Accompanying the Postmaster General will be Charles Meyer, Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs; Fred Chapin, Country Director for Bolivia, State Department; and Lt. Gen. Seth McKee, Assistant Vice-Chief of State for the Air Force.
    • Gardner Stout of the American Museum met with the President at the White House. The American Museum has loaned to the President the portrait of Theodore Roosevelt painted by Philip de Lazlo which is hanging in the Cabinet Room.
    • The President met with Chairman Roy Ash and members of the President's Advisory Commission on Executive Organization.

    • DEAN C. SMITH, of Washington, to be United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington for the term of 4 years, vice Smithmore P. Myers, resigned.
    • R. JACKSON B. SMITH, JR., of Georgia, to be United States Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia for the term of 4 years, vice Donald H. Fraser, resigning.
  • Each Public Papers of the Presidents volume contains the papers and speeches of the President of the United States that were issued by the White House Office of the Press Secretary during the time period specified by the volume. The material is presented in chronological order, and the dates shown in the headings are the dates of the documents or events. In instances when the release date differs from the date of the document itself, that fact is shown in the text note.

    To ensure accuracy, remarks have been checked against audio recordings (when available) and signed documents have been checked against the original, unless otherwise noted. Editors have provided text notes and cross references for purposes of identification or clarity.

Archival Holdings

  • The H. R. Haldeman Diaries consists of seven handwritten diaries, 36 dictated diaries recorded as sound recordings, and two handwritten audio cassette tape subject logs. The diaries and logs reflect H. R. Haldeman’s candid personal record and reflections on events, issues, and people encountered during his service in the Nixon White House. As administrative assistant to the President and Chief of Staff, Haldeman attended and participated in public events and private meetings covering the entire scope of issues in which the Nixon White House engaged in during the years 1969-1973.     • 6. Memorandum of Conversation , Washington, April 29, 1969, 3 p.m.

      Source: National Archives, Nixon Presidential Materials, NSC Files, Box 533, Country Files, Far East, Japan, Vol I. Secret. Drafted by Sneider. The meeting took place in the White House. On May 10 Eagleburger approved this memorandum with distribution to the Department of State. (Ibid.) On April 29 Sneider drafted Kissinger’s talking points for this meeting, informing Kissinger that Togo was visiting Washington in order to present Japan’s initial position concerning the Okinawa negotiations. Sneider remarked, “Since your views will have considerable weight in Tokyo, I would suggest that you take a fairly tough line—it is good negotiating tactics with the Japanese.” (Ibid.)

    • 87. Memorandum From the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs (Ware) to Secretary of Defense Laird, Washington, April 29, 1969

      Ware transmitted a Talking Paper which discussed the projected seabeds treaty for Laird’s use at the NSC meeting on April 30. The more detailed Talking Paper unpacked the nuanced disagreement between the OSD and JCS over security interests, factors, and prospective success of the proposed seabed treaty.

    • 19. Telegram 4275 From the Embassy in Pakistan to the Department of State, Rawalpindi, April 29, 1969, 0832Z

      Ambassador Oehlert reported that the Pakistani Government was offering to consider a continuation on a “smaller and less visible basis” of the U.S. use of the facilities at Peshawar.

    Haiti

    • 381. Memorandum From the Deputy Director of Coordination, Bureau of Intelligence and Research (Trueheart) to the Assistant Secretary for Inter-American Affairs (Meyer), Washington, April 29, 1969. , Washington, April 29, 1969

      Deputy Director Trueheart reported that at an April 15 meeting, CIA briefed the 303 Committee on covert support to a group of prominent anti-Duvalier Haitian exiles. CIA mentioned concerns over disclosure of the covert program “as the result of possible prosecution by the Department of Justice of two Haitians formerly affiliated with the coalition and four United States citizens for violation of certain U.S. laws in connection with their individual unauthorized participation in the abortive 20 May 1968 invasion of Haiti.”

  • The Kissinger telephone conversation transcripts consist of approximately 20,000 pages of transcripts of Kissinger’s telephone conversations during his tenure as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (1969-1974) and Secretary of State (1973-1974) during the administration of President Richard Nixon. Visit the finding aid for more information.
