    Following is a listing of items of general interest which were announced in the press but not made public as formal White House press releases during the period covered by this issue. Appointments requiring Senate approval are not included since they appear in the list of nominations submitted to the Senate, below.

    • Foreign Minister Valdes of Chile and Ambassadors from Latin American countries met with the President at the White House. Foreign Minister Valdes presented a document outlining the views of Latin American nations who met in Vina del Mar last month on inter-American economic and social problems.
    • The President transmitted to the Congress the second annual report of the National Advisory Council on Economic Opportunity.

  • Each Public Papers of the Presidents volume contains the papers and speeches of the President of the United States that were issued by the White House Office of the Press Secretary during the time period specified by the volume. The material is presented in chronological order, and the dates shown in the headings are the dates of the documents or events. In instances when the release date differs from the date of the document itself, that fact is shown in the text note.

    To ensure accuracy, remarks have been checked against audio recordings (when available) and signed documents have been checked against the original, unless otherwise noted. Editors have provided text notes and cross references for purposes of identification or clarity.

  • The Federal Register is the official daily publication for rules, proposed rules, and notices of federal agencies and organizations, as well as executive orders and other Presidential documents.

  • The Congressional Record is the official daily record of the debates and proceedings of the U.S. Congress.

Archival Holdings

  • The H. R. Haldeman Diaries consists of seven handwritten diaries, 36 dictated diaries recorded as sound recordings, and two handwritten audio cassette tape subject logs. The diaries and logs reflect H. R. Haldeman’s candid personal record and reflections on events, issues, and people encountered during his service in the Nixon White House. As administrative assistant to the President and Chief of Staff, Haldeman attended and participated in public events and private meetings covering the entire scope of issues in which the Nixon White House engaged in during the years 1969-1973.   • The National Archives Catalog is the online portal to the records held at the National Archives, and information about those records. It is the main way of describing our holdings and also provides access to electronic records and digitized versions of our holdings.

    • 83. Memorandum From the President’s Assistant for National Security Affairs (Kissinger) to President Nixon, Washington, June 11, 1969

      Source: National Archives, Nixon Presidential Materials, NSC Files, Box 1319, Unfiled Material, 3 of 19. Secret; Nodis. Sent for action. Originally dated June 7, then re-dated by hand June 11. Sneider sent this memorandum to Kissinger on June 2 with the recommendation that he sign and send it to the President. The second page was redone, apparently at Kissinger’s request. A note on the first page presumably by Sneider reads: “President was shown this by HAK on trip to Honolulu, RS.” This note is apparently in response to an attached note by Haig, June 11, that reads: “Dick Sneider, Dick—Pres did not see this [.] it’s now OBE in some respects—should we update and refloat? Al.”

Prepared in response to NSSM 34, Document 4. Prepared by a Working Group of the Korean Task Force. Although NSSM 34 called for review of this study by the NSC Review Group, it was scheduled for review by the Washington Special Actions Group; see Documents 28 and 29.

      Apparently the sections of the study were prepared at different times because they have different dates. Section IA was drafted on May 20; section IB on June 7; sections IC and ID on June 11; section IIA on June 7; section IIB on June 11; and section III on June 2.

    Nigerian Civil War

    • 76. Telegram 5314 From the Embassy in Nigeria to the Department of State, Lagos, June 11, 1969, 1629Z

      Ambassador Mathews reported on his meeting with Federal Commissioner for External Affairs Arikpo, during which he presented U.S. views on Federal Military Government (FMG) policy toward relief flights, the FMG statement in response to a U.S. press release (see Documents 72 and 73), and FMG assurances that the Nigerian Air Force could be controlled. Arikpo stated that the FMG must control its air space. Regarding the FMG statement, Arikpo said it had come from the Ministry of Information and was not an expression of FMG policy.

    Peru

    • 603. Telegram 4312 From the Embassy in Peru to the Department of State, June 11, 1969, 1847Z. , June 11, 1969, 1847Z

      This telegram transmitted a message from Deputy Chief of Mission Ernest Siracusa, in which he recounted a 40 minute meeting with President Velasco. During this discussion, the two spoke about the fisheries dispute and the impasse over the IPC case.

A stamped notation on the telegram indicates that it was received at the WHCA at 27Z on June 11. In telegram 94400 from the Department of State, June 10, Rogers instructed Siracusa to inform Velasco that the United States would lift its FMS suspension if the CEP governments would announce they would attend a conference on fisheries.   • The Kissinger telephone conversation transcripts consist of approximately 20,000 pages of transcripts of Kissinger’s telephone conversations during his tenure as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (1969-1974) and Secretary of State (1973-1974) during the administration of President Richard Nixon. Visit the finding aid for more information.
