Roger A. Freeman (White House Central Files: Staff Member & Office Files)

Nixon Library Research Room

Yorba Linda, Calif. – The Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum announces the opening of the Roger A. Freeman Collection for research. The collection documents Freeman’s work as a federal policy advisor and Special Assistant to the President during the Nixon Administration, with materials dating primarily from 1968 to 1970.

Roger A. Freeman served as Special Assistant to the President from 1969 to 1970 and participated in the Arthur Burns pre-presidential task forces in 1968. The collection documents Freeman’s work on domestic policy issues, including education, public welfare, taxation, and federal-state relations, and reflects policy discussions concerning the role of the federal government in financing and administering domestic programs.

Records from Freeman’s tenure illustrate his close working relationships with senior advisors Martin Anderson and Arthur F. Burns and provide insight into policy development within the Executive Office of the President. Materials include subject files, proposed presidential directives, and task force files addressing a wide range of domestic policy issues.

About the Files

The Roger A. Freeman Collection is arranged in three series: Subject Files, Presidential Directives, and Task Force Files. The Subject Files series is arranged alphabetically by topic and includes materials related to cost of living, health and welfare, and tax reform. The Presidential Directives series contains proposed directives and recommendations for presidential action, arranged by department and issue. The Task Force Files series is arranged numerically and then alphabetically, and documents public welfare and related policy initiatives.

Related materials may be found in the White House Central Files (WHCF), including Staff Member and Office Files (SMOF) for Martin Anderson and Arthur F. Burns, as well as records of the Council of Economic Advisors.

The Roger A. Freeman Collection is available for research at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. Researchers are encouraged to consult the collection finding aid for detailed information on the scope, arrangement, and contents of the materials.
