Newly-opened ME (Messages) subject files in the White House Central File Collection

White House Central Files: Subject Files: ME (Messages) category

Nixon Library Research Room

The Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum has fully released the ME (Messages) category, which is part of the White House Central Files: Subject Files. The collection includes approximately 290,000 pages of new material spanning the years 1969-1974.

This subject category was used to file materials related to messages, greetings, statements, and similar communications sent from the President or the White House such as: congratulations on anniversaries; birthday greetings; statements of sympathy and condolences; and messages on the occasion of special events (e.g. cornerstone laying and dedications).

Primary correspondents included in this collection include President Nixon, John Ehrlichman, James Keogh, Noble Melencamp, Hugh Sloan, Herbert Klein, Alexander Butterfield, Raymond Price, and members of the public.

There are two designations within the files of Executive and General communications. Executive communications include messages between or on behalf of correspondents with agencies of foreign, national, state and local governments, and with prominent individuals. General communications are designated as General communications between or on behalf of government officials and private citizens and organizations.

About the Files
