Virtual Reference Service (VRS)
The Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum announces the launch of its new Virtual Reference Service (VRS), designed to provide researchers with remote access to archival materials. This innovative service allows users to engage with historical documents through scheduled, staff-mediated sessions conducted virtually.
This service is designed to improve access for researchers who may be unable to visit the Nixon Library in person or who wish to preview materials before planning a research trip. The VRS complements, rather than replaces, the traditional research room experience.
How the Service Works
Researchers schedule a one-hour appointment via our online booking system.
During your appointment, requested materials are displayed in real time via a document camera using Google Meet. Library staff will handle and navigate the materials while you view them remotely, similar to an in-person research room experience.
Please note: This service provides access to materials only. It does not include research consultation, interpretation, or subject-matter assistance. Staff will provide a general overview of the materials within each folder.
Materials not generally available: Audiovisual, oversize records, and previously digitized documents.
Sessions occur weekly and should be reserved at least one week in advance.
Appointment Guidelines
- Appointments are free and last one hour
- Conducted via Google Meet
- All appointments take place in the Pacific Time Zone (PT)
- Researchers may view one archival box or up to five folders per session
- Limited to two appointments per researcher, per month
- Researchers direct the review while Library staff handle all the archival materials
What You Can Expect
- Live, virtual viewing of archival materials
- Staff-mediated page turning and navigation
- General overview of folders and documents, including an approximate page count of each folder viewed
- Session recording
What to Know Before You Book
The Virtual Reference Service is intended to provide limited access to archival materials.
It is not:
- An interpretation of records or historical events
- An extensive records search
- A substitute for an in-person research visit when more comprehensive research is required
Researchers should identify the materials they wish to review before requesting an appointment.
Researchers are responsible for providing clear collection, box, and/or folder information. Appointments that do not provide clear collection information are subject to postponement.
During your appointment
- Let the staff member know if you are having technical difficulties.
- Let us know when you are ready to move on (i.e., turn the page or move to the next folder/box).
- For your convenience your session will be recorded and sent to you afterwards.
- Please let us know If you would like high quality digital scans of any materials, we can provide information about our reproduction services.
Important Information
- We recommend that you have access to a microphone during your appointment to communicate with staff and provide directions during your appointment - A webcam is optional.
- For optimal viewing, you should not use a smartphone or tablet for your appointment.
- We are unable to provide technical assistance in preparation for your session.
- Your session will be recorded. If you do not want your session recorded, please let us know at the time of your appointment.
Please note that if you do not log into your session within 10 minutes of the start time, your appointment will be cancelled.

The VRS is currently offered as a pilot program while the Library evaluates procedures, capacity, and user experience. Consequently, service availability, scheduling procedures, and program guidelines may change as the program develops.
