    President's Office Files

    The President's Office Files consists of materials drawn together by the Special Files Unit from several administrative subdivisions within the White House Office. It is the handwriting and sensitive papers sent to the Staff Secretary that now comprise much of the President's Office Files. Visit the finding aid to learn more.

  • The H. R. Haldeman Diaries consists of seven handwritten diaries, 36 dictated diaries recorded as sound recordings, and two handwritten audio cassette tape subject logs. The diaries and logs reflect H. R. Haldeman’s candid personal record and reflections on events, issues, and people encountered during his service in the Nixon White House. As administrative assistant to the President and Chief of Staff, Haldeman attended and participated in public events and private meetings covering the entire scope of issues in which the Nixon White House engaged in during the years 1969-1973.       Friday, December 26 - Tuesday, December 30.

      We went to Palm Springs, and again no direct contact with President, but lot of time on the phone with staff. No problems. President cranking on wrap-up work, mainly budget. Also spent lot of time on schedule discussions especially with Chapin, which was good for him. President arrived in San Clemente Tuesday afternoon late, in a sensational mood. I met the chopper at the compound - he seemed very pleased and relaxed. Was elated by reception at El Toro and obviously glad to be home.

      Called me as I was leaving office at 6:00, just wanted to chat. Especially interested in how things look for us out here. Feels he gained by delaying the trip (I agree) and that overall we're still in good shape. Realizes we have a tough year ahead and looking for ways to consolidate the gains so far, before it all hits again.

      Wants to go to Santa Ana and register to vote - where he used to practice law. Feels time out here should be basically low key, but wants to sign some important bill on January 1, to start off the New Year. Will have to create something, since everything is already signed.
