The President's day began at San Clemente, California

  • The Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents made available transcripts of the President's news conferences; messages to Congress; public speeches, remarks, and statements; and other Presidential materials released by the White House.

Digitized versions can be found at HathiTrust.

  • Each Public Papers of the Presidents volume contains the papers and speeches of the President of the United States that were issued by the White House Office of the Press Secretary during the time period specified by the volume. The material is presented in chronological order, and the dates shown in the headings are the dates of the documents or events. In instances when the release date differs from the date of the document itself, that fact is shown in the text note.

To ensure accuracy, remarks have been checked against audio recordings (when available) and signed documents have been checked against the original, unless otherwise noted. Editors have provided text notes and cross references for purposes of identification or clarity.

  • The Federal Register is the official daily publication for rules, proposed rules, and notices of federal agencies and organizations, as well as executive orders and other Presidential documents.

Archival Holdings

Many documents to be found this way do not lend themselves to association with specific dates, but are essential to a complete understanding of the material.

    President's Office Files

The President's Office Files consists of materials drawn together by the Special Files Unit from several administrative subdivisions within the White House Office. It is the handwriting and sensitive papers sent to the Staff Secretary that now comprise much of the President's Office Files. Visit the finding aid to learn more.

    • Annotated and Unmarked News Summaries [Note: Although there was no News Summary on this date, due to the way News Summary products were compiled, you should also consult nearby days for potentially relevant materials.]
  • The H. R. Haldeman Diaries consists of seven handwritten diaries, 36 dictated diaries recorded as sound recordings, and two handwritten audio cassette tape subject logs. The diaries and logs reflect H. R. Haldeman’s candid personal record and reflections on events, issues, and people encountered during his service in the Nixon White House. As administrative assistant to the President and Chief of Staff, Haldeman attended and participated in public events and private meetings covering the entire scope of issues in which the Nixon White House engaged in during the years 1969-1973. • Transcript of diary entry (PDF)
      Friday, August 25.

In the office at San Clemente. Went through a whole bunch of miscellaneous follow-up things. Wants Bill Rogers to take his wife to Japan, wants the Utica speech edited and get copies out to people for follow-up, was upset about the Washington Post crowd estimate of only 3,000 in San Diego when there were actually about 15,000. Wants to lock the Gateway West deal in San Francisco. Wants to use "Over There" as the music for the Nixon Now campaign song. Wants to get out the background story on the secret of our youth operation, which is that they run it themselves. He's delighted with the whole youth thing, and I think we've really made that point in the Convention and the follow-up day yesterday. Wants to get certificates to all the people who participated in the Convention, wants to change the plan for airport and other arrivals to have someone introduce the President. Wants to invite Billy Graham for Sunday night to the reception. Wants Ehrlichman to get a writer to work for him, sharpening up his stuff. Agreed to have Laird out here Monday, on the draft announcement, and to make the troop announcement on Tuesday. Got into a lot of the details on the celebrity party.

Connally called, said he wants to postpone his Democrats deal for a couple of weeks, and he'll be out here. President invited him out here Friday night for dinner with Nellie, not knowing that we won't be back from Hawai’i in time. Told me to talk to Connally about scheduling, and his thoughts on that, which caused a long conference call that Ehrlichman, Connally, Mitchell, and I had. Nothing startling in that. Mitchell and Connally are both very upbeat, they both think that everything's going very well, there's some concern about the GAO report and all that, but seemed to feel we can ride through that okay.

President’s concerned about the press conference plan, he doesn't want the press to know that we're going to do it on Tuesday, and he's going back and forth on what day to do it. Also whether to limit it to just political questions, or all kinds of questions. He went around on that, and then said it should be limited just to political, and that I should tell Buchanan that for his preparation planning.

Big flaps back and forth on the party again, as Mrs. Nixon and Lucy changed the plans from what the President wants regarding where the receiving line's to be, whether there's to be a platform for remarks, and all that sort of thing, but I think we got them all ironed out.

      End of August 25.
