Sunday, August 16.
At Camp David. Very quiet day. Returned to DC at 4:00. President did decide last night to go visit Camp Hoover today, but then reversed it today. Wants to go some afternoon and scout it.
Monumental flap with Kissinger, who called accusing President and me of playing games with him yesterday regarding boat ride, etc., to cover up plan to have Rogers up to Camp David. Incredible. But he was really convinced - as, apparently, was Haig. Guess they sat there all day stewing. Really ridiculous, because we released Rogers to press as part of party, no attempt to cover it at all. Guess Kissinger is uptight about Middle East and is imagining things. He made reference to several early morning phone calls from President yesterday, with quick hang ups. Very hard to figure - but has to be cleared up. He called me again at home, but I didn't quiet him much. - Handwritten diary entry (JPG)
