FG 147 (Interdepartmental Committee on the Status of Women) (White House Central Files: Subject Files)

Scope and Content Note

Despite its title, the file FG 147 contains few documents from the Interdepartmental Committee on the Status of Women. A large portion of the documents actually come from the Citizens Advisory Council on the Status of Women, a body created as an adjunct to the Interdepartmental Committee. Both bodies were created by Executive Order 11126 of November 1, 1963 as amended by Executive Order 11221 of May 6, 1965.

The Interdepartmental Committee on the Status of Women and the Citizens Advisory Council on the Status of Women were created to review and evaluate the progress of organizations in furthering the full participation of women in American life and to act as a clearinghouse for information on governmental action on issues of concern to women.

Principal correspondents include the President and Jacqueline Goyette Gutwillig, Chairman of the Citizens Advisory Council on the Status of Women.

It should be borne in mind that the file FG 147 represents only contacts between the White House and the Interdepartmental Committee on the Status of Women and the Citizens Advisory Council on the Status of Women, rather than working papers or other substantive documents. The Executive folders contain a relatively large number of acknowledgment letters to the Chairman and members of the Citizens Advisory Council on the Status of Women, scheduling information for meetings between the President and the Council, and the report of the Council for 1971. The General folders contain letters from members of the general public on issues of concern to women.

On the folders, the terms Executive and General are used in the titles to indicate separation of documents according to source and handling. "Executive" items include communication among national, foreign, and state and local governments and their agencies, members of Congress, and selected prominent correspondents. "General" designates communications between Government officials and private citizens, institutions, and private interest groups. Where "/A" follows a numeric file designation, it indicates files relating to appointments, nominations, and resignations within that organization.
