First Lady Pat Nixon visited Liberia in January of 1972 as President Nixon’s representative on the occasion of President William Tolbert’s inauguration. During her short stay in West Africa, she visited the Ivory Coast with hails of “Vive Madame Nixon” from the citizenry. Her visit to Ghana was special as she made her way from Accra to the hillsides of Aburi to meet friend and tribal chief Nana Osae Djan II whom she and Vice President Nixon had met in 1957. As the President’s Ambassador, Mrs. Nixon addressed the National Assembly in Ghana.
As part of the Girl Scouts’ 99th Anniversary being celebrated here at the Library, the Orange County Girl Scouts will be donating shoes to the people of Ghana. In celebration of what would have been Mrs. Nixon’s 99th Birthday, we have assembled a group of items given to her during her visit to Ghana, including a pair of leather sandals from that visit to an old friend in Aburi.
