Organizational Note

The Inter-Agency Economic Adjustment Committee was established by President Richard M. Nixon, March 4, 1970. The Committee provided advise, assistance and support to the Secretary of Defense, and coordinated economic adjustment activities that responded to significant defense program changes: i.e. military base closures, reductions in defense personnel, major weapons contract terminations.  Committee activities included identifying regions economically impacted by defense program changes and preparing development plans to coordinate federal, state, and local economic adjustment efforts. The Committee was composed of the Secretary of Defense (chairperson), the Secretary of the Interior, the Secretary of Agriculture, the Secretary of Commerce, the Secretary of Labor, the Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, the Secretary of Transportation, the Administrator, General Services Administration, and the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors.
