Learn About the Tapes

The Nixon White House Tapes are among the National Archives' most important holdings – and also among the most fragile.

The Nixon White House Tapes are organized in two groups:

  1. Complete ConversationsProcessed and released according to the 1996 Tapes Settlement Agreement, these tapes are being processed chronologically in segments.

  2. Watergate-Related ConversationsSubpoenaed by the Watergate Special Prosecution Force, these segments (excerpts) were among the first tapes released to the public.

Some of the most unique records among the Nixon holdings are the Nixon White House Tapes. Processing and preserving these important artifacts are essential elements of our mission.
