In response to a lawsuit filed by Public Citizen and Professor Stanley Kutler, the National Archives, the Nixon Estate, and Public Citizen established the negotiated Tapes Settlement Agreement of 1996. This agreement established a schedule for the processing of the Nixon White House Tapes.
The schedule separated the tapes into several chronological segments for review and release:
Conversations took place in the Cabinet Room between February 16, 1971 and July 11, 1973.
Conversations took place in the Oval Office, the EOB, and other locations between February 16, 1971 and July 18, 1973.
