July 21, 2011 Opening

On July 21, 2011, the Nixon Library opened over 500,000 pages of Presidential records, approximately an hour of White House dictabelt recordings and a Web exhibit on the Decision to Bomb North Vietnam in December 1972, the first in its "Exploring Our Sources" web exhibits.

Textual Records

Since its establishment in July 2007, the National Archives' Nixon Library has released nearly 1.4 million pages of Presidential records. This release includes the files of David Gergen, the chief of the White House speechwriting staff in 1973-74 (200,000 pages) and those of the Congressional relations office headed by William E. Timmons (300,000 pages).

In addition, the Library is opening approximately 4,000 pages of previously classified documents.

The Dictabelts

In addition to the extensive White House taping system, that recorded President Nixon's conversations, there were a few limited taping systems in the Nixon White House. Aides H. R. "Bob" Haldeman, John D. Ehrlichman, Lawrence Higby, and Charles Colson used dictabelt machines to record some of their meeting and telephone conversations. The President also used a dictabelt machine but only to dictate memoranda.

Today's release is the first from the Library's dictabelt collection. It includes dictations and conversations related to abuses of governmental powers.
