Scope and Content Note

This subject category contains materials pertaining to various insurance topics such as auto, disaster, disability, health, fire, agricultural, marine, life, surety, unemployment compensation, and flood insurance. These materials consist of 1-1/3 cubic feet, of which some 3 inches are restricted.

The terms Executive and General used before the code "IS," and all subdivisions thereunder, generally determine the source of the materials thus coded. Items designated "Executive" are communications among national, foreign, state and local governments and their agencies, Members of Congress, and other prominent people. Items designated "General" are communications between government officials and private citizens, institutions, businesses, and other private interests. The topics filed under each category are generally similar.

The Insurance subject file is organized under an alphabetical-numeric subject classification scheme of three primary categories. These are: IS, general insurance matters; IS-1, Accident-Hospital-Medical Health materials; and IS-2, Disaster-Flood-Fire-Marine, matters, with each of these major categories further divided by subseries.
